Freedom of Expression and the Danish Cartoons of Mohammed

Early in September 2005 the cultural editor of Jyllands-Posten commissioned twelve cartoonists to draw cartoons of Mohammed, being motivated by the difficulties that Danish writer K re Bluitgen had finding artists to illustrate his children’s book about Muhammad. The cartoons were published by Jyllands-Posten in late September 2005. Two weeks later nearly 3,500 people demonstrated peacefully in Copenhagen.
