INGO meeting

The Conference of International Non-Governmental Organisations (INGOs) recognised by the Council of Europe met on 1-3 October 2008, with IHEU represented by Silvia Geise (who heads the IHEU delegation), Michel Grosmann and Georges Liénard (nominated by EHF).  (Keith Porteous Wood was not present.)

The meeting elected chairs and vice-chairs of the five committees:

  1. Human rights committee
  2. Sustainable Territorial development Committee
  3. Social cohesion and eradication of poverty Committee
  4. Civil society and Democracy  Committee
  5. Culture, science and education Committee

IHEU delegates have become members of the three Committees in  bold type but will monitor the work of the other two.

The delegates have issued a request for IHEU and EHF member organisations to send them documents and reports on topics relevant to the work of the committees so as to help them present humanist positions and enhance the visibility of humanism at the Council of Europe.  If you have any such material, please send it to fhe@ulb.ac.be with “Council of Europe” as the subject.

The Parliamentary Assembly

Resolutions and working documents of the Assembly are all published. Among them is a resolution on “Combating violence against women: towards a CoE convention” which includes a link to the preceding report.

There is also an interesting proposal for a resolution on  “Women’s access to lawful medical care: the problem of unregulated use of conscientious objection”
